Abstract: Computing discrepancies of {n_k*x} for general sequences of integers (n_k) is a long-standing open problem in number theory.Only scattered results exist and they cover a very restricted class of integers. We employ a probabilistic argument building on the ideas of P. Schatte to approximate the sequences of integers of linear growth(which have measure one in the class of all increasing sequences of integers) with continuous random variables. This enables us to compute the corresponding discrepancy exactly, the limit turns out to be a function "almost pathological" in nature. Along the way we prove several probabilistic results, namely Strassen type Functional Laws of the Iterated Logarithm, however the main focus is on the number-theoretic application.[hide abstract] | |
